Nathan Francis has charted an extraordinary path in the jazz world, deeply influenced by his experiences living and working in both the United States and Finland. This international perspective brings a unique richness to his music, blending diverse cultural elements and styles from across the spectrum of improvised music.
Nathan's formal education began in Portland, Oregon where he absorbed and thrived in a celebrated music community. He continued on to study at Portland State University, The San Francisco Conservatory, and ultimately graduated from the prestigious Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki, where he earned a degree in Jazz Studies. This solid academic foundation set the stage for an already prolific career, marked by the recording of three albums under his own name and performances with numerous celebrated jazz musicians such as Randy Weston, Larry Willis, Peter Bernstein, Seamus Blake, George Colligan, Alan Jones, and Benny Benack among others.
Nathan's dedication to his craft extends beyond performance to education. He has taught extensively, both privately and in classroom settings, across the United States, Finland, and Italy. His teaching philosophy is shaped by his own studies with renowned bassists Chuck Israels, Jason Schooler, Richard Giddens and Or Bareket. Through these experiences, he has developed a profound understanding of music that he passionately imparts to his students.
Nathan's ability to connect with his audience, combined with his technical skill and creative expression, makes his performances memorable and impactful. Whether in an intimate jazz club or a large festival, Nathan’s presence on stage is captivating.
In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Nathan is constantly seeking new musical horizons. He is currently exploring innovative directions in jazz, working on his next album, and collaborating with other artists. Nathan currently lives in New York City where he maintains an active performing schedule. When not at home, Francis continues to work, record, and teach internationally.
